← All postsIndependent musician's song spreading through a network of friends — music discovery through people, not algorithms

The Algorithm Won't Discover You. Your Friends Will.

You upload a song. You share it everywhere. You check your numbers the next morning and see the same few listeners who always show up.

That isn't a sign the song is bad. It's how most music platforms are built.

Algorithms follow the crowd

Recommendation engines learn from listening data. Songs with lots of plays get recommended more, which earns them more plays. An artist with no audience gives the system almost nothing to learn from, so it has no reason to put them in front of anyone.

The result is a loop. To get recommended you need listeners, and to get listeners you need to be recommended. Most independent artists never get inside it.

How people actually find music they love

Ask anyone how they found their favorite band and the answer is rarely "a playlist." It's a friend who wouldn't stop talking about them. An older sibling's car stereo. A song playing in a shop that made them ask, "Who is this?"

Recommendations from people carry trust that a feed never will. When a friend says "you need to hear this," you listen.

FriendsGroove is built on that instead

FriendsGroove replaces the algorithm with the friend graph. Every connection is a numbered mutual friendship: you and a fan both choose each other, and they get a permanent number in your story.

When a friend shares your Groove, your music travels to the people who trust them. Each new friend can bring the next one. Discovery doesn't depend on how many plays you already have. It depends on whether someone cared enough to pass you along.

The feed works the same way. It's friends-only, so what fans see comes from artists and people they've chosen, not whoever is paying for reach that week.

Discovery off the screen, too

FriendsGroove also reaches people who weren't looking for music at all. Through Scan and Groove, real shops (coffee shops, bakeries, farm stands) give customers a free song with a simple scan. A stranger hears your track while waiting for a latte, and can friend you on the spot. See how Scan and Groove works for artists.

What this means for you

  • You don't need an existing audience to be found
  • Every fan who joins can bring more fans with them
  • Your music reaches people through someone they trust

If you've been waiting for an algorithm to notice you, stop waiting. Start with your first friend.
